Confused regarding RF-2 and RF-3, and which one is suitable for your cluster?

If you have a 3 node cluster and your data resiliency is okay, you can handle a failure of 1 node, this is termed as FT-1 (Fault Tolerance), or alternatively RF-2. RF-2 is Redundancy Factor - 2, which states that all data in your NX environment has another copy distributed in your cluster, which makes it possible for the cluster to sustain a single component failure and is the default fault tolerance configuration for your cluster. What if you're handling a larger cluster and your workload is extremely critical? Redundancy factor 3 is a configurable option that allows a Nutanix cluster to withstand the simultaneous failure of two components by saving 2 copies of all your data in two different nodes in your NX environment. How much resources do CVMs need?

The Nutanix CVM is what runs the Nutanix software and serves all of the I/O operations to the hypervisor and all VMs running on that host hence it is of crucial importance to configure CMVs with the right amount of resources. The RAM and CPU allocation of the CVM both depend on the model of the nodes, the storage capacity of the cluster and the features used in the cluster. CVM maintenance and Host maintenance

Every architecture remains stable due to scheduled maintenance, in which we might need to shutdown the node or CVM to increase memory, replace network adapters or just some planned maintenance activity. In Nutanix, we have heard the term “CVM maintenance mode”. So what does it mean? Why do we need to put the CVM in maintenance mode if we are thinking of bringing down the CVM? All the CVMs in the cluster interact with each other using microservices handling the cluster stability, we need to inform the cluster if a CVM is going down and shutdown all the services in the CVM gracefully before shutting down the CVM. To make a CVM not part of any active storage and metadata connection, we enable maintenance mode in the CVM. So what is host maintenance mode? Confused regarding vNic and Physical Nic and their capabilities?

Let's say that you have 25 Gbps SFP+ Network card in your host and have created a Windows Virtual Machine with a 1 Gbps Nic card and now confused regarding the bandwidth for the virtual machine and how the Virtual Nic of the VM is different than the Host Nic when it comes to bandwidth and functionality. vNic is the software NIC emulation in the VM and is just a driver and in latest VMs the NIC is para-virtualised, which means that the NIC and Operating System is aware of the Host Physical NIC capability and understands that the vNic is just a driver. LACP configuration is always a tricky business for every administrator and network engineer and enabling and verifying the configuration of LACP on NX Nodes should not send chills down your spine.First, let’s understand why we need LACP What are the advantages of LACP? A single user VM with multiple TCP streams could use up to 20 Gbps of bandwidth in an AHV node with two 10 GB adapters. A traffic-hashing algorithm such as balance-TCP can split traffic between multiple links in an active-active fashion. Because the uplinks appear as a single L2 link, the algorithm can balance the traffic among bond members without any regard for switch MAC address tables.
