Hi All, Just wanted to let you know that using traditional SQL failover clusters and SQL FCI, or any MSCS / Microsoft failover cluster is available in tech preview as of NOS 4.1.5. This is because we have introduced SCSI 3 Persistent Reservations to the iSCSI stack. To implement a cluster you need to use the MS iSCSI Initator and the Nutanix Volume Groups contract and iSCSI target for in-Guest iSCSI access. This will become a full GA feature in an upcoming release of NOS. Please experiment with it and let us know your thoughts.
I've just written an article about the official VMware vRealize Operaitons Management Pack for Nutanix that was published by Blue Medora. If you're interested in running Oracle on the Nutanix platform then you should check out my latest blog article titled Oracle Licensing and Support on Nutanix Virtual Computing Platform - http://longwhiteclouds.com/2014/05/11/oracle-licensing-and-support-on-nutanix-virtual-computing-platform/. We are in the process of publishing a Tech Note on Oracle for Nutanix and also a Best Practice Guide. These should be available on our web site in the next few weeks.
Subsequent to the recent VDI Assurance program announcement I published a blog article about what an infrastructure to support 20K to 200K+ Power User desktops might look like on Nutanix. I thought this might be of interest. Not only is this solution incredibly space efficient, what you see is the complete server, storage and network required, but it's also incredibly power efficient. With the new Nutanix VDI Assurance Program it makes any scale VDI even more accessible and beneficial to everyone.
My team and I was helping a customer troubleshoot a performance problem with their Oracle 11g R2 (11.2.0.4) database today and we noticed that it was taking between 90 seconds and 120 seconds to complete a checkpoint. Anyone who knows anything about Oracle knows that this is an eternity for a database to wait while switching online redo log files and continuing to process transactions. This was causing a lot of performance dissatisfaction for the customer, which is understandable. But it didn’t take long to figure out what the problem was and fix it. Literally changing a single parameter in the database and restarting the instance turbo charged performance by over 10X. First lets cover off some of the symptoms of this problem and give you some background before I give you the parameter we used to address the performance issue. Also note that this had nothing to do with the underlying infrastructure, it was purely a database level setting. This problem wouldn’t happen in Oracle 12c.
Hi All, I thought this might be of interest to people that want to use SQL Server with Acropolis Hypervisor. Which is fully supported by Microsoft under the SVVP program. So here is a way you can rapidly provision as many SQL Server DB's as you like. http://longwhiteclouds.com/2015/08/07/rapid-provisioning-of-sql-server-test-environments-with-nutanix/
Hi All, I thought you might be interested in the blog article I posted on rapid provisioning of Linux VDI desktops with Horizon View on Nutanix. I have included all the scripts I used to make this work. Hope you like it. http://longwhiteclouds.com/2015/08/06/rapid-provisioning-linux-vdi-desktops-with-horizon-view/ Kind regards, Michael
In case you hadn't seen the release notes for the Nutanix Acropolis Base Software 4.5 (previously NOS), Windows Failover Cluster is now GA and can be configured for SQL Server Failover Cluster Instances and other use cases with In-Guest iSCSI and MPIO support. Please check out the release notes and upgrade to 4.5 if you wish to use this feature. https://portal.nutanix.com/#/page/docs/details?targetId=Release_Notes-Acr_v4_5:rel_Release_Notes-Acr_v4_5.html
In addition to the video I recorded regarding SQL Server Provisioning with VAAI I've written an article tonight including the scripts I used to clone the VM's, tune the network, and the RunOnce script that ties it all together. I hope this is helpful. http://longwhiteclouds.com/2015/01/27/nutanix-sql-server-db-vaai-clone-performance/
I'e just published a video demonstrating provisioning multiple SQL VM's in just minutes using VAAI Clones on the Nutanix platform. The SQL DB VM's are 435GB in size, but due to VAAI the new clones don't use any additional stroage capacity initially.Nutanix Provisioning SQL Server VM's with VAAI Clones
