5 Essential Tips for Maximizing Your Experience at Nutanix .NEXT for Bloggers
I’ve had a very frustrating experience with Self-Service via Prism Central (pc.2021.1.0.1).We do not have CALM, but since Nutanix does have Self-Service with Prism Central, we’ve been trying to use that feature for our users. However, the solution is very flaky with some of the issues below:Poor RBAC. The roles seem target to CALM. Why show Blueprints when CALM isn’t licensed? Difficult to provide as-required privileges for a self-service user. The user can create VM recovery points, but cannot see them for recovery (tried all built-in roles). Dead links. Self-service users see links for CALM, Files, Karbon. However, when clicked, they either throw an error or unavailable message or log the user out. Self-Service user sees more info than required. Can download cluster keys, etc.If Nutanix can provide a solid Self-Service experience in PC without CALM, that’d go a long way in attracting new customers and then later the customers may explore CALM.
I’m tuning RBAC to provide Self-Service users with just enough permissions for CRUD operations on VMs and Recovery points using the API and custom roles. When trying to create a VM, I see the following message with the “VM Template” radio button greyed out: There are currently no VM templates available in the projects that you are a part of. So, where is the association of VM Templates to a project? I created a couple of VM templates by creating the required images and adding them to the catalog. Is there some special permission required for this (because playing with RBAC has made this greyed out)?
Hi, Is there any way to automate the addition of a VM to the Catalog (for PC Self-Service)? i.e. REST API/acli/ncli/anything? I couldn’t find it and want to confirm.
I’m using AOS 5.15.4 and Prism Central pc.2021.1.0.1. Been trying to Update a VM’s categories using the v3 API PUT operation, but I keep getting the following error:{'api_version': '3.1', 'code': 409, 'message_list': [{'message': 'Edit conflict: please retry change. Entity CAS version mismatch.', 'reason': 'CONCURRENT_REQUESTS_NOT_ALLOWED'}], 'state': 'ERROR'}I’ve seen others get the same error as well, but without any resolution mentioned. Tried a few suggestions (use_categories_mapping = True, machine_type = “PC”, checked spec_version) depending on suggestions in forums/Support Portal, but nothing worked. Also, I’ve noticed (from release notes in various versions) that this error appears now and then with mentions of it being fixed. What is this error and why is it plaguing the v3 API? An update operation with PUT is very useful for automation and customization. Do the versions of PC and PE (mentioned above) that I’m running have this bug which is fixed in a later version of PE (AOS),
We are migrating workloads from VMware (vSphere 6.5) to Nutanix AHV (AOS 5.15 LTS). With regards to VM templates, any advantage in creating new templates on AHV? Any gotchas if we migrate (as per procedure, prepare and use Nutanix Move) VM templates to AHV? Anyway, we will have to migrate most workloads, but was wondering about VM templates. We’re leaning towards erring on the side of caution and creating new templates (Linux/Windows) on AHV. However, I just wanted to know if anybody experienced issues with VMs built from migrated templates on AHV and any feedback.
I want to introduce Self-Service VM operations via Prism Central for our end-users (do not have CALM). So, I’ve used cloud-init (Linux VMs) and cloudbase-init (Windows VMs) along with customization code (Python) to deliver this Self-Service VM provisioning experience. You may refer https://github.com/cybergavin/nutanix/tree/master/self-service for details of this set up. Any feedback always welcome. Sorry if the code isn’t too pythonic as I’m a python newbie.
HiIs there a way to check the versions of all Nutanix components in one view? “ncli cluster info” displays the AOS and NCC versions, but not those of AHV and PC. The AHV and PC versions may be obtained from the PC UI (in different places though). Further, the Nutanix release timeline shows AOS 5.18 as the latest, but the documentation has tags for 5.19?
