5 Essential Tips for Maximizing Your Experience at Nutanix .NEXT for Bloggers
That's good do know, I am looking to take an existing NAS running Windows 2012 R2 Storage Server make a connection to the single node target via iSCSI and/or SMB3. We're a small hosting provider, so instead of buying a 3rd party NAS, I would love if the single node target could act as a NAS and be supported by Nutanix. I then would be able to use Nutanix backups and Storagecraft for backups. Do you think I would be supported by Nutanix if I do this ? G
There are some videos on "you tube" (search vmwaremine) and some documentation in the portal. If you import the .vhd or vhdx into "Image Configuration" you should not have any issue creating a VM. What I did, was create a few test servers with multiple volumes and partitions and converted them so I could figure out how AHV/Nutanix was "handling" them. BTW - Ensure you install the Nutanix Guest tools before you "import" them to Image Manager!!! Other things to watch out for are the registry changes in the VM that might need to be changed due to the way AHV handles time during boot up...that's all in the portal. If you have different/multiple storage containers, then when you import, put them into the correct container, if not you will need to reimport again....don't ask me how I know this..... Extra precautions I took was to get a screenshot of the Disk Managment inside the VM, just in case.... I used Chrome on the HyperV host to connect & import to the Nutanix console.
Andres, I did not have to do anything to get them to boot if I understand your question correctly. A couple of things to note:

The machines were Generation 1 not Generation 2
I installed VM Mobility and rebooted the VM before shutting down and migrating to AHV.
After they booted the first time in AHV and the "new" devices were detected. I rebooted the VM and removed all the hidden devices.
Hope this helps... G
Hi, Final update, it seems that my hanging issue was due to the NetKVM driver. Upgrading the NetKVM to version 1.118 seem to fix it. Server is normal again. I'm going to wait until tech suppport comes up with a fix for the chkdsk solution that is more automated. I don't run chkdsk very often. Thanks G
Hi, This post is just an update. Firstly and most importantly, I want acknowledge David Griffin in tech support. He really stepped up on this issue !!! It seems to be some sort of bug that has something do with scsi_passthru on the Windows VM Guests. From what I observed with David in support is that the disks were cloned from scsi to scisi without passthru. After that, process, chkdsk /f worked normally. We did this first on a Windows 2012 R2 test VM to ensure it worked. We then performed this task on my SBS 2011 server and we were able to run a chkdsk. Hopefully this stops the issue I was having with this server freezing. Also, In the event logs, I would notice that when a server would boot, the time in the event log prior to the w32time service starting was off by hours. We applied KB3134 and most importantly you need to power down the Guest VM. Reboot did not take effect!!!! Thanks for reading.... G
Hi, Just wanted to confirm that I was able to upload a vhdx via the image service. From there I was able to create the VMs. Thanks, G
Jon, Thank I will test it with smaller vmdk. Does this work with HyperV vhdx as well ? Thanks, G
Jon, Thanks so much!!! I just did another server with a 1.8TB vmdk and it took a day+ to upload and then image create!!!! Serves me right!!!!, I should have asked before and could have saved myself a weekend.... Lesson learned.... G
Jon, Thanks for the follow up. I will try it in the next few weeks. G
Thanks for checking for me... FYI- the only issue using raw is that the destination for the RAW file has to have enough space to to match the partition size. So a 1.5 TB Windows partition (with 20% used) will still need 1.5 TB. If QCOW2/vmdk or some other format that will only copy only actual used space would be helpful. I'm hoping to use the StarWind converter to get the images onto a Synolgy NAS with and SSD inside to help things move along..... So I would be going HyperV-->Synology NAS-->AHV G
Hi Jon, Thanks for the great info, I will revisit the information at Lenovo's site. I should have quantified my info a bit more, sorry about that..... We're looking to build maybe at the most a 200 virutal machines, private cloud offering for our clients, we'd be happy if we can do that amount. My reference material so far has been this https://lenovopress.com/lp0504.pdf I'm working with Lenovo (we are a Lenovo reseller as well) and we deal with SMB clients, so we're looking to have a between 20-40 clients that each have 2-3 VM's per client. Backups - For backups, I should have stated, we use Storagecraft (similar to Acronis) for archiving and it does support SMB, FTP as destinations. I need to be able to restore data and complete systems up to 3 weeks back. I will still see what snapshots can give me and if Storagecraft has abilities to read snapshots. AFS for backup - I have a personal dislike for RAID and in most backup t
