5 Essential Tips for Maximizing Your Experience at Nutanix .NEXT for Bloggers
Fair enough and thank-you. The extra detail makes sense and puts things into perspective. Happy to answer any questions that anyone has, and .. just remembered that I need to upgrade my community edition labs to the latest version :)
I think there is a fair bit of fud in your post jtempleton. For transparency, I work at Commvault (Now: Customer Support) so take this with the usual vendor bias and skepticism. I have been working with Nutanix since 2015 and having so many solutions to pick from is a tesitment to the success of their platform and awesomeness of the community that has resulted. You are incorrect on the integration point in your post. Most solutions now are integrating with Nutanix's data protection API. Commvault was the first to provide agentless backups (we believed :D) and no, it does not require physical hardware (grab a trial version and see for yourself). Likewise I think our friends at Veeam also provide direct integration now without the use of agents. I even think Veritas has announced or has support using agentless methods. Sure, we're going to recommend physical when you achieve massive scale - but so will Veeam and other vendors if you need deduplication for any significant size of back
Commvault ;) You can download a 30-day trial. Its agentless backup and recovery for VMware, Hyper-V or AHV in the Nutanix, context, plus plenty of enterprise apps with agents or even agentless backup of Azure, Amazon, Oracle etc.
Hey guys, Commvault guy here - let me know if you had any questions. Quick overview based on this thread of what we can help with. We can talk natively to Amazon/Azure and a bunch of other cloud providers for backup storage and long term retention/tape replacement. We also support things like Glacier and Azure Cool storage - no need for infrastructure (VMs/Instances) running in the cloud to get fully compressed and deduplicated copies of data copied to the cloud. We track blocks locally on-prem and so can minimize the amount of data you need to shift over the wire only to unique blocks which can help with lower bandwidth connections. For VMware and Hyper-V workloads we can recover those to Amazon and Azure as running instances agentlessly. Either by shifting data stored locally or by using the data you sent to the cloud already (latter requires a small VM instance to process the conversion). Towards the end of the year we will be adding replication as well to assist with
In SP5 (just released a couple weeks ago) we added windows File level recovery for AHV Virtual Machines. In SP4 we could only really do Unix VMs due to a tiny issue about AHV telling us what the guest OS was, but we have worked around that and now file/folder provide recovery for Windows. We also extended IntelliSnap support to AHV! So now you can leverage the power of individual VM hardware snapshots, perform instant reverts (PIT recoveries) and also convert those snapshots to a disk, tape or cloud backup copy for long term retention. Some other cool pieces on the way too but one step at a time!
Hi Commvault product manager here, working on the integration and partnership with Nutanix. Please let me know if you have any questions or if I can assist you in any way. We believe in giving our customers choice - Data protection shouldn't lock you in to choosing a Hypervisor or infrastructure that is not the best fit. To that point, we support 4 Hypervisors today and very soon AHV will be our 5th once generally available (March) - And don't think we are stopping there :) We announced AHV support yesterday - you can read about it here and see a sneak peak of protecting and recovering . We also have IntelliSnap (hardware snapshot) support avaliable today for VMware and Hyper-V with Nutanix. We're just getting started with Nutanix, a great partner with amazing tech!
