More interesting…Not the version of Powershell. I found two even older versions and it works just fine.So now I am down to why doesn’t it work on this one particular machine (which of course is the one machine I am supposed to do all my work from)… 🙄
Interesting update… I just tried from a different machine and it worked fine.Could Powershell version be an issue? 7.2.10 is what is installed on the machine that doesn’t work.7.3.4 is what is installed on the machine that does work.Maybe I will try and install an older version on another machine and see.
Maybe not. I found one that is pc.2022.6.0.5 and get the same message connecting to that one as well.
Yes, I tried the IP address as well but get the same message. From your screenshot, I see that both my PCs are newer versions. It may be a case where it only works to older versions. I need to look around in the environment and see if I can find an older one and test that hypothesis.
Unfortunately I have not found a way to do this with Nutanix AHV. VMware has the Invoke-VMScript which works through the VMware Tools. I have not found similar functionality with Nutanix. I’ve only done it using networked remote access methods. If you find something, please post here for others to benefit. -TimG
I did it by editing the unattended answer file applied to the VM I created. I’ve not done it from local storage but here is some code where I create images from a VM. Maybe the $ImageSpec.url can be manipulated to retrieve the file locally. So this is what I ended up doing. I will do it this way until such time as maybe there are changes such as the ability to deploy across different storage containers. So far only one AHV cluster has more than one storage container so it isn’t too bad yet. On the source AHV cluster, I have a Windows 2012R2, a Windows 2016 and a Windows 2019 “golden image” VM setup. I then clone those and run sysprep and shut them down. I have a protection domain setup to replicate those sysprep VMs to the other AHV clusters every night. I also have the original (not sysprepped) VMs setup in a local protection domain just for backup purposes. When I update the golden images with Windows Patches, I wait until the new images are replicated to the remote AHV clusters. I wrote a PowerShell script that will go through each remote AHV cluster and delete existing disk images, restore the sysprepped VMs from snapshots, upload new disk images from the restored VMs then delete the restored VMs. It
It would appear that images are also stored on specific storage containers and it won’t let me create a VM in one container with a disk image in another container. So, whether I create a VM from disk images or clone from VMs, I have to keep a set on each storage container in a cluster (usually two: one RF2 and one RF3). I’ll put in a support ticket and see what happens.
After reviewing the Image Management material, although images seem to make the most sense there does not seem to be a way to throttle the bandwidth. Some of our sites have small WAN connections and if I upload an 80GB disk image then Prism Central could flood that connection when transferring the image to that remote cluster.
Thank you @Alona, that is a correct description of the environment. Due to the multiple containers in each cluster (one RF2 and one RF3), I am leaning towards using the Prism Central image management. Thank you for the link to the guide. If I get something up and running, I will be sure and post back my results.
I managed to do this “the hard way” by using REST API. I did figure out that I wasn’t actually deleting the VMNIC like I thought. The -Nicid parameter is actually looking for the MAC address. Once I used that then I could delete the NIC. Of course, when you remove the NIC and then add a new one to it then that changes the MAC address.
Agreed. Our management is pushing to switch to AHV as primary hypervisor and I’ve been working to convert my PowerCLI scripts to work with AHV environments and hitting a lot of roadblocks.
I tried removing the NIC and then adding the NIC with “isConnected = False” in the VMNicSpecDTO but it still started up as connected.

It must have something to do with the content of the file itself. I tried copying and pasting into the box and got the same error. I typed just a simple command in the box and then it saved just fine.
To start, I’m just trying to deploy a VM from the gui using my unattend.xml file. Once I get that to work then I will try to get it working from PowerShell. When I choose to upload a file and click save, it gives me an error. I’ve tried several different xml files but it is not letting me save.
Is the guest-customization available in the PowerShell cmdlet New-NTNXVirtualMachine? I am primarily looking at creating Windows VMs. I’ve based my efforts from this script: Create-NTNXVM.ps1 Thanks for the info, I will look into this as an option.
