Nutanix Files uses storage and client networks. The IP addresses are within the user-defined range for VLAN and IP addresses.

Storage network ( Internal Network )

  1. The storage network enables communication between the FSVMs and the Controller VM.

  2. It also provides access to Nutanix Volumes iSCSI vDisks in volume groups.

  3. The storage interface helps manage deployment, failover, and maintenance, and enables control over one-click upgrades.

  4. Integration with the CVM lets the FSVM determine if a storage fault has occurred and, if so, whether you must take action.

  5. The FSVM service  ( minerva_nvm) sends a heartbeat to its local CVM service each second indicating its state.

  6.  The FSVM service (minerva_ha) sends a heartbeat to the other FSVMs indicating its state.

There will be 'n+1' IP addresses in this Pool, n is the number of File Server VMs. The 1 extra IP is the Virtual IP for the AFS cluster.

Virtual IP : Whichever FSVM is the prism leader will host this IP on interface eth0:1

CVM will communicate to the FSVMs on this IP.

Client network ( External Network )

  1. The client network enables communication between the clients and the FSVMs.

  2. The client network is also used to communicate with the directory services.

  3. The client interface allows clients to connect to SMB shares and NFS exports hosted on a FSVM.

  4. A client can connect to any FSVM client network interface to access their file data. If a different FSVM provides the data, the client connection automatically redirects to the correct FSVM interface.

  5. If an FSVM fails, the client network address for the failed FSVM moves to another to preserve data access.

There will be 'n' IP addresses in this Pool, n is the number of File Server VMs.

Note: The CVM and FSVM internal IPs should belong in the same subnet.
