What are you using for backup Nutanix?

I'm looking into backing up our Nutanix Acropolis cluster to either Azure or AWS. What I'm curious about are the actual costs once you factor in not just their basic storage rate, but Puts and data writes and everything that happens during a backup and restore (rare as those would be). We have around 5 TB total with all our VMs, with the daily snapshots averaging around 40GB in changed data. We would want to retain maybe a month's worth of backups with dailies and weeklies. Is this enough data to do a decent estimate, or is it one of those 'Try and see' scenarios? I'd be interested in anybody else that's utilizaing it as a remote backup site and what kinds of costs they're seeing. Thanks! Clint

Does anyone have thoughts on how backup and recovery will work with the Acropolis hypervisor? Our company is definitely interested in moving in this direction, but the simplicity of Veeam B&R has been great, and I do not want to move away from that unless there is a solution that provides all of veeams features.

We are moving away from VMware over to Acropolis and I was wondering what others have been using to backup their VMs under Acropolis, 3rd party wise? Under VMware, we had been using Veeam, but this is no longer a choice.Any comments/suggestions would be helpful.

Trying the veeam AHV appliance, i had a crash whilst taking a backup now am left with orphaned snapshots on a PAID ACCOUNT, and nutanix sends the ball to veeam back to nutanix, so here i am Protection Domain DP-QC-3 has 3 aged third-party backup snapshot(s) and may unnecessarily consume storage space in the cluster. i have a multitude of these and want to manually remove those snapshots, is there a process for this ?

Hello! I’m pretty new to this Nutanix world. Have been dealing with standard server+storage for more than a decade. We have 2 clusters here, with 3 nodes in each site with metro availability. There are 3 protection domains active in each site (active) that are replicated to the other site (passive) and vice-versa.    Site1: Node1 - Node3 - Node5 PDs site1 (active): PROD_001, DEV_001, INFRA_001 PDs site1 (passive): PROD_002, DEV_002, INFRA_002   Site2: Node2 - Node4 - Node6 PDs site2 (active): PROD_002, DEV_002, INFRA_002 PDs site2 (passive): PROD_001, DEV_001, INFRA_001   In vCenter cluster configuration we obviously have affinity rules for VMs/Hosts in site1 and VMs/Hosts in site2, preventing the VMs running in “odd” nodes from being stored in “even” nodes. Hi all We recently converted one of our environments to AHV/Acropolis from ESX/VCenter. All is well and runs just fine. One of the caveats is, we have a tertiary machine we use in “disaster” type scenarios and with this machine we would use our backup solution to “backup” a VM to and run with VMWare Workstation. As I understand it, Nutanix does not offer a “Workstation” type solution, so I am reaching out to hopefully receive some feedback on what a “new” solution would entail. Could I build a small PC and run Community edition on it? Can communtiy edition run on say an i9/32gb RAM/1TB ssd or does it need N+1 to function? This way I could point my backup solution to the new cluster or have my cluster be aware of a NAS solution and ingest the AHV VM as needed in these type scenarios. Any feedback will help me in the endeavor!

Hello, Is there a way (other than REST or scripting/crontab) to put any new VM created inside a container to a "default" protection domain? The rationale is to create a "standard" policy for all VMs of a cluster like "this cluster is replicated every 2h, by default", then if exceptions need to be handled, they can be treated on a case by case basis. I have a customer that is PoCing Nutanix, with the goal to move from a NetApp/NFS/IBM Blades solution to Nutanix if everything goes well. Problem is, they use SnapMirror to replicate their datastore (1 by cluster) every 1h. They do want to be able to replicate just a VM, but they don't want to have to add each new VM individually to a protection domain. Sylvain.

Hello, When I try to do a consistent snapshot I get this: Warning : Vss snapshot failed for the VM(s) xxx, protected by xxx because Quiescing guest VM(s) failed or timed out. Impact : Crash consistent snapshot is taken instead of application consistent snapshot. Cause : Guest is not able to quiesce VM due to internal error. The servers has the NGT installed, are alone in the consistency group. Before I open a case, I'd like to have your hindsight. Thanks.

Hello everyone,I started a new project in which we need to be prepared for a Disaster Recovery between 2 Nutanix clusters in different regions. I did the Data Protection from Prism Central just fine in the beginning, already have 8 VM with NearSync enabled with RPO of 15min. However, this new VM has been giving me trouble lately, giving me a RPO up to 3 hours because of the following issues: Warning : Snapshot Replication to Remote Site is Lagging.Warning : Snapshot queued for replications to remote siteWarning : Entity is being transitioned to a lower frequency snapshot schedule. To be fair this new VM is kinda big, with 10 cores, 50GB RAM, and 1.22 TB storage used. It’s for a high transactional MSSQL Server database.I am basically stuck deciding if this is a networking problem, or a workload capacity from Nutanix problem.We are supposedly using 200MBps LAN-to-LAN network

Hello  Data replication, which was well done until yesterday, has stopped and is not progressing. Only one of the five scheduled schedules will be suspended. Note that the three entities that correspond to the schedule are excluded from the schedule for a while. After increasing the cpu and memory, I included it again. Is there any part or command I need to check? This is a dark site, so remote assistance is not available. Help me.

How Nutanix protection domain replication can be encrypted, is there any default encryption availableor we need to enable the encryption.

All Nutanix containers are thin provisioned by default; this is a feature of NDFS. Thin provisioning is a widely accepted technology that has been proven over time by multiple storage vendors, including VMware. I've a couple of vms building a windows failover cluster. Shared storage is provided by a NDFS volume group attached to vms using iscsi. It's possible to create a vss enabled snapshot of this cluster?

Hello everyone, I am wondering if anyone had any insights on how to get a succesful backup with veeam and nutanix and if there is something I am just overlooking. I know I am oversimplifying but I have followed the best practices setup and have checked all of the settings twice but somehow I still get the following error: 12/5/2015 1:30:11 PM :: Unable to allocate processing resources. Error: Provider [{89300202-3cec-4981-9171-19f59559e0f2}] does not support shadow copies of volume [\LSSHARE01LIFE_NTNX01].--tr:Failed to add volumes to the snapshot set.--tr:Failed to perform pre-backup tasks. I could have sworn that if NOS is added to AD then the share can use the VSS. I am frankly not finding any information on this and have gone from logs, to accounts, to verifying the storage. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Hi team, I have created a Protection Domain with one VM. I have setup a daily schedule with a retention policy of 5. When I look at the local snapshots, I shows me the last 5 snapshots that are available. This is the same when I tick the box "Include Expired". When I add up the reclaimable space for these 5 snapshots, the total comes to 143.72 MiB. When I look at the value of "Snapshot Exclusive Usage" for the PD, it tells me 492.48 MiB. Why the difference? On a related question: what is the impact on performance when deleting snapshots? I understand it is a background process, but is there any impact on the protected VM(s) when this is initiated or while it runs? The environment is running AOS 5.0.1. Thank you. Marc.

Hey guys,I made a quite new discovery that is totally new to me and I try to understand where this is comming from, maybe someone can help :)Scenario: There are 2 ESX clusters, connected via Metro. The DataStore on the source site is ~2TB, the datastore on the destination is about 1TB and I have no clue why :)Both DataStores only use compression, there are no other snapshots on the source side and this is for a couple of days now, so no curator run should be involved. Ideas anyone? Cheers, Flo

Dears:I checked the “Nutanix Disaster Recovery Guide” and found from AOS 6.6, CG replication was supported on async replication, but not on nearsync or sync replication. Any ideas about CG when support near sync replication?The reason why I will have this question is we want to use CG nearsync replication to protect SQL server cluster. (Our RPO is about 10-15 mins), so I am worried about during planned failover or unplanned failover, the SQL server cluster could not start normally. Thank you very much!
