Hypervisor Upgrade From Windows 2012 R2 to Windows 2019

Hi Team,

We have a Nutanix box SX-1065-G5 which is running with Windows Server 2012 R2 hypervisor OS. Now we are out of Nutanix support since we are having older AOS version. When we try to upgrade AOS, we cannot upgrade since new AOS will not be supported with  Windows Server 2012 R2.

Now we are planning to upgrade the hypervisor to Windows Server 2019, can you please advise will there be any challenges ? Since our Nutanix box is old, will it support Windows Server 2019 ?

I was thinking of using AHV as the hypervisor, but we don’t have any other resource to move existing VM’s ?

You can upgrade Windows server 2012 to Windows server 2016 which is support by AOS 5.5 (released in Dec 2017). After Windows server upgrade, you can perform AOS upgrade to 5.10.11.x. Then upgrade AOS from 5.10.11.x to 5.15.5 which supports Windows Server 2016. Then again upgrade Windows Server from 2016 to 2019. and Lastly upgrade.AOS from 5.15.5 to latest LTS to be released in summer this year. Then your Hyp. and AOS both will be under support. There is a feature in Nutanix where in you can perform cross hypervisor DR however that does not support Hyper-V. so you need to move the VMs and reimage the nodes to use the AHV hypervisor.

Dear Amit,

Thanks for the detailed reply. The problem is that we cannot move VM’s to other nodes as there is no space available and the complete Nutanix block is packed and full. In this scenario, how can i upgrade ? Can i do inplace upgrade for Hypervisor ? Without causing any changes ? or do i need to move all VM’s to new location (export / import) and freshly install Hypervisor from scratch ?

In case the cluster is full, you need to shut down the VM and perform the AOS upgrade. In place hypervisor is not support for Hyper-V but only for VMware ESXi. You can use Nutanix move to migrate VM’s  but you need another cluster(on prem or cloud) to move the VM’s.

SX-1065-G5 Hardware Supported to Windows Server 2019 for Windows Hyper-V and you can upgrade the AOS Version as per the HCL list. Refer the HCL Matrix: Compatibility and Interoperability Matrix

Yes, The hardware you use, supports Windows Server 2019 for Hyper-V as long as AOS version deployed also supports it. Apply the filter on AOS version you have and check.

Hi Team,

Thanks for all your help and support.

I had the discussion with customer based on your inputs, unfortunately customer is only having Windows Server 2016 license with them and they don’t have budget now to purchase 2019 or 2022.

What is the last supported AOS version with Windows Server 2016 ? iam getting confused while checking the support matrix link shared by @sanajy3288
