Space in middle of an AFS share name

Hi, we want to move all our shares from our old NetApp over to AFS. Our plan was to create all the shares move data over then create a DNS CNAME pointing AFS to our old share names so we would not have to change any shares settings of our end users.

got AFS going and started to create shares and realized it would not let us add a space in a share name. Looking at the documentation it only says you cant have a space as the first or last character of the share which we were not doing. Would be tons of work if we could not do this on AFS as we would have to go around and remap all the shares on the network which is no small task.

Any input is appreciated.

Error from AFS when trying to make a share with the name Department Folders was this:

Error creating share/export: Only English letters, decimal digits (0-9), periods, hyphens and underscores are allowed. Share name should not begin with a period. Share name can end with a single $.

Here is the requirements I saw:

https://portal.nutanix.com/#/page/docs/details?targetId=Acropolis-File-Services-Guide-v22:afs-file-share-create-wc-t.html

Note:
  • The following share names are not allowed:
  • Global
  • Printers
  • admin$ (reserved)
  • ipc$ (reserved)
  • homes (reserved)
  • Share names are not case sensitive.
  • Each share name must be unique.
  • Share name has a maximum of 80 characters.
  • A blank space or space character cannot be used as the first or last character in the share name.
  • Share names that end with the $ are hidden shares.

Seems kinda strange that article they linked you is the same one I referenced all it says is this:

  • A blank space or space character cannot be used as the first or last character in the share name.
So even the article they sent you says nothing about a space in the share name only as the first of last character

We have the same issue with an open support ticket. Here's how support has responded in a series of emails:

  1. It is NOT recommended to use Space in AFS Share Name. I’m checking with Engineering team for their guidance further.
  2. As mentioned earlier, it is NOT recommended and supported to use Space in AFS Share Name. I’m checking with Engineering team for further guidance.
  3. I did get a response from Engineering Team mentioning that we cannot use space in AFS Share Name. Please refer to section “Name” under link below: https://portal.nutanix.com/#/page/docs/details?targetId=Acropolis-File-Services-Guide-v22:afs-file-share-create-wc-t.html

We have an existing AFS share with a space in the name, so at some point it was disallowed. Planning to migrate data from a share with a space in the name and the application requires it to match, so it's kind of a deal breaker for AFS (at least short term) if we can't resolve.

Per support, a space in AFS share names was possible in 5.5.x and disallowed starting in 5.6.x. Good news:

use of Space in AFS Share Name is allowed in AOS Version 5.10.

Which, sounds like it should be out around the end of this month or early December.
