SMTP issue on new cluster

Hi,

I have just set up two new clusters (4.7.2.1) with 4 nodes each.

I have configured SMTP settings similar on both (pointint to my local exchange server, default port, no auth). One of them succeeds in the configuration and the other one doesn't.
using ncli cluster get-smtp-settings i get the following output on the troubled clutster:

Status : failedMessage : Failed to send email through the smtp serverLast Retry Attempted : Wed Nov 02 14:23:13 CET 2016

But if I try to do a ncli cluster send-test-email it works and send an e-mail without issues.

Does anyone got an idea what could cause this behavior?

Thanks!

Quick update:

I solved this by adding all the CVM IP's to the allowed internal relays list on Exchange. Before i only allowed the cluster IP's which caused the SMTP test to fail. As soon as the CVM IP's got added the test succeeded.

Very odd, especially since the test email works.

Can you submit a support ticket (portal.nutanix.com if you are a NX or SX customer, your respective OEM if you're a HX or XC customer), and we can work through this on a WebEx with you?

Thanks,
Jon

Yes it's very strange that the test e-mail works but the configuration doesn't.

I am an XC customer and don't think I'm elligible for support yet as I have done the cluster configuration myself (since it's so easy) and haven't gotten it approved yet by Dell PS. So I don't think I'm able to create a ticket yet :-(

Please just give it a shot. They should allow you to submit a ticket, and have that ticket escalated to us so we can look at this SMTP issue. As you saw, there really isnt a whole lot to the SMTP configuration, meaning things you could have misconfigured is pretty low.

I'm getting the same issue, but even after adding all CVM IP address to the Exchange 2010 server relay list, it still shows "unknown" status.
Did you set any security mode?, Exchange 2010 shows TLS policy, i'm not sure if STARTTLS works with this policity.

Thanks

pcontreras - Can you file a support ticket and we'll dig into it with you?

pcontreras,

Just wondering if you got any further with your issue? We appear to be having the same, and its a bit annoying for something that should be so easy!

Exact same issue, SMTP email works, but the verification step would say failed.

Initially it worked well, however after we upgraded our Exchange server to 2016 it stopped working.

The IP address of nutanix are allowed, of 'course. The accepted domains lists the default domains.

Need to understand Nutanix's smtp server verification method in order to troubleshoot this annoyance.

Also noticed while doing SMTP tests from Nutanix console via port 25, EHLO command would not receive any response from our SMTP server.

However 'ncli cluster send-test-email recipient=' command works well...

I have a similar problem with the smtp test passes successfully,
but when setting up the server I get an error: Cannot update SMTP server details in Community Edition.
From ce-2017.05.22 before the cluster update, the configuration was successful,
after updating to version ce-2017.07.20 I can not configure the SMTP server
