i'm trying to setup a new nested lab on ESXi 6 (following this ) but i've an error at the end of installation process and the CVM does not starts and says to check firstboot.log.
In the file i can see:

FATAL: Execution of cmd [['virsh start "NTNX-364cbf6-A-CVM"']] failed for reason [
error: Failed to start domain NTNX-364cbf6c-A-CVM
error: internal error: qemu unexcpectedly closed the monitor: qemu-kvm: /builddir/build/BUILD/qemu-kvm-2.6.0/target-i386/kvm.c:1745: kvm_put_msrs: Assertion 'ret == n' failed.]

Any ideas on how to solve?

Only other suggestion I have is to download a prior version like CE-2018.01.30 and see if that works.

Do you have any NVMe drives in your system?

I've tried to make changes you suggested but it still doesn't work

This is annoying. Apparently random keystrokes and symbols are not working. Have to remove some symbols for this to post properly.

change 1
type arch='x86-64' machine='pc-i440fx-rhel7.2.0' (just change the 3 to a 2)

change 2
machine name='pc-i440fx-rhel7.2.0' alias='pc' hotplugCpus''yes' MaxCpus='240'

Note - do you have any NVMe drives in your build? I had to move my vm's to a non-NVMe SSD a while back due to incompatibilities. Haven't tried to move them back though.

I reinstalled and got it working. After the install process completes and it reads "CVM starting", ssh into the host and make the following changes:

Change 1-
change line 8 in /home/install/phx_iso/phoenix/svm_template/kvm/default.xml to read:

Save file.

Change 2-
next go to /var/cache/libvirt/qemu/capabilities and edit the file in that directory that ends in .xml. It" ll="" be="" a="" long="" string.=""
Go to end of file and make the following change:

save file.

If CVM still hasn" t="" started,="" ssh="" to="" cvm="" and="" run="" "cluster="" start".="" it="" should="" at="" this="" point="" load="" all="" services="" allow="" you="" get="" into="" prism.=""

If that doesn't work, try running the installer process again. It should work the second time.

Let me see if I can re-create. What CE version did you download?

Hi Brian,

thanks for your reply. I've already tried both procedures in that link (also a post there) but unfortunately doesn't worked for me

I recently rebuilt my home lab and ran into this issue as well. Fortunately there are many others that have encountered the same issue and reported on it. Follow the link below. There you find two procedures for fixing a non-booting CVM (requires you to update two files).

It worked for me on nested CE 2018.01.03 on vmware Workstation 14.
