using cloud-init to automatically populate ip details ?

Hi all

Not sure where to put this, so #admins please feel free to move if needed.

I can use cloud-init to populate hostname and fqdn into Linux configs on cloning templates, but can't get it to work with ipaddr, gateway, netmask . All the examples I've tried (including those on Nutanix best practices guide either:
a) Throw an "invalid customisation error" on save of the clone dialogue, or
b) Don't do a lot and generate a standard dhcp ifcfg-eth0, or
c) Generate half an ifcfg-eth0, but without ip details

I've tried write-files, network-interfaces & potentially a few other things in various guises

There is a case raised but it's stalled with support assuming it's a cloud-init issue

Wondering if anyone out there has come across this/successfully populated IP Addresses ?

AHV Nutanix 20160925.91
OEL 6.9, 7.4, RHEL 6.9,7.4
cloud-init.x86_64 0.7.5-8.el6_9.2

Thanks !
