Protection Domain Replication

Assuming I have 10TB of total storage in my cluster, 2 VMs at 500GB storage per VM, and a Protection Domain defined to include those 2 VMs:

- what will the total amount of data transmitted to my Remote Site be on the initial replication? 10TB or 1TB (2 x 500GB VMs)?

Hi Patrick,

The total amount of data transferred would be 1TB in this case for the initial replication.

The size of the consistancy group (total number of VMs in a consistancy group) would be the amount of data transmitted initially.

Perfect...

Then I assume on the next replication, only the changes/updates will be replicated?

Absolutely.

So the first time you replicate, there is a snapshot taken for the VMs and then this snapshot data is replicated to remote site. On the next interval, a new snapshot is taken and the difference between the earlier snapshot and new snapshot is copied over to the remote site hence updating the snapshot image on remote site to the new one.

Jumping on this a little late, but had some further questions around replicatoin of Protection Domains....If I create a target container at the remote site and turn on deduplication will vms that are replicated to the target container dedup against vms that are already there?

The way I understand it, deduplication / compression etc on disk is only a function of the destination container. One or both sides can have features enabled.
