Nutanix Files storage network extra IP

Hi all,

I’ve just recently deployed a couple of Nutanix files servers for a client without any serious problem. During the process I have read all the great official documentation that nutanix maintains (really, really useful) but it seems that i can’t find an answer for the following question:

What is the purpose of that extra IP address that every file server requires on the storage network side? I’ve noticed that the address is held by one of the FSVM but I can’t figure out what is it used for. Curiosity is killing me.

That’s a good point. I haven’t been able to find explicit indication so far but it makes sense to me. Two clusters communicating with each other would benefit from using VIP on each side. If a node fails either on FSVM or on the CVM side then no rediscovery is needed. VIP is passed on and business is as usual.

The extra IP is for a VIP. The request arrives at the VIP and  is then re-directed towards the FSVM that holds the share.

 

Thanks for your answer Alona. Now I’m even more confused hahahaha!!!

Because the IP is on the storage network side of the file server, I assume that the VIP is used for receiving requests from the CVMs. But why would a CVM send request to a file server VIP? I thought that the communication is always established from FSVM to CVM.
