With 'acli' on the host, I can see that the machine_type for any Guest VM is indeed 'pc' instead of 'pc-i440fx-rhel7.2.0'. Unfortunately, acli vm.update VM machine_type=pc-i440fx-rhel7.2.0 doesn't work, error 'Unknown keyword argument: machine_type'.

but acli vm.update VM extra_flags=machine_type=pc-i440fx-rhel7.2.0 works, and the Guest VM boots! This is a decent work-around for now..

Guys,

Got around to some more testing today and found a workable solution which also covers the creation of new VMs. After this workaround you are able to create working VMs without updating the VM with ACLI.

You can find the complete workaround below.

a) Add pmu state in svm template by following the next steps:
  • Boot CE VM
  • Login with root / nutanix/4u
  • Navigate to /home/install/phx_iso/phoenix/svm_template/kvm
  • Edit default.xml and add pmu state value. default.xml should look like the below screenshot:

b)
  • Navigate to /var/cache/libvirt/qemu/capabilities/
  • There should be 1 xml file, in my case it's 3c76bc41d59c0c7314b1ae8e63f4f765d2cf16abaeea081b3ca1f5d8732f7bb1.xml
  • Edit the file and at the bottom you have different machine types defined
  • remove the line

  • Edit the line

  • To the following

  • Final config should look like similar to this:

  • Save the file and reboot the VM, after this you can login with install and proceed as normal.
Have fun guys!

I can confirm that @matmassez 's complete workaround works perfectly ! Thanks a lot !

Works for me under Win7-64/Workstation14.1.1 - Built an Ubuntu 16.04 guest and nothing is bombing out yet. Need to test it on my ESXi 6.5U1 host. Thanks @matmassez ! 🎯

The instructions worked perfectly for my ESXi 6.5U1 lab host, too. Nested VM boots as well.
I'm facing a bit different issue.... initial installation is successful but after the first reboot I'm facing CVM boot problems:

I have the same problem as you, because by default the virtual machine's network card is VMXnet3.

Thanks a lot jpiscaer! works great for me too

My homelab is based on
Intel NUC 6i5SYH with 32GB RAM
VMware 6.5u1
iSCSI LUNs on Synology
Latest Nutanix CE with AHV Nested as VM

Hi,
which CE version did you use? 5.5 or 5.6? These workarounds should in most cases no longer be needed in 5.6.
Did you follow the complete workaround by matmassez?

I tried creating disk descriptor but it could not identify by workstation.
my system config - Processor AMD, 32 GB RAM and 1 TB disk

Is it possible to install on vmware workstation 14, if so can some1 provide some guidance etc

Hi,
as far as I remember AMD is not supported.
For VMware, take a look at http://www.nutanixpedia.com/p/running-nutanix-ce-on-vmware-workstation.html

Hi @rakeshbca

Did you see the reply from @andrew_ct

Hi all,

i've tried both options and still get the error:

and :

I'm using 2 HP DL385 G7 with AMD CPUs but with the previous versions I remember I've been able to setup a CE lab with the changes suggested here:

http://vnews.fr/create-nutanix-ce-vm-nested-on-esxi-6/?utm_content=bufferf1650&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer

".. edit /home/install/phx_iso/phoenix/minimum_reqs.py and comment checkVtx(cpuinfo) and checkIsIntel(cpuinfo)"

Is this still valid for the latest CE?

Thanks,
Nicola
