• Add-node capability will function with nodes that do not have IPMI interfaces.
• Erasure Coding Tech Preview: Erasure coding increases the effective or usable capacity on a cluster.
• Acropolis Image Service: Image service enables you to import the images (ISOs, disk images, or any images which are supported in ESXi or Hyper-V format) directly into Acropolis.
• Acropolis High Availability (HA): When a node becomes unavailable, VMs that are running on that node are restarted on another node in the same cluster.
• Acropolis Volume Management: The Acropolis volumes API exposes back-end NDFS storage to guest operating system, physical hosts, and containers through iSCSI.
• Improved single-node cluster setup during the installation process - 192.168.5.x is explicitly disallowed for host & CVM, other 192.168.x.x IPs will work correctly.
• Improved installation error handling.
• Installation process will correctly truncate device WWNs that exceed 16 characters.

• Image Service Now Available in the Prism Web ConsoleThe Prism web console Image Configuration workflow enables you to upload ISO or disk images (in ESXi or Hyper-V format) to a Nutanix Acropolis hypervisor (AHV) cluster by specifying a remote repository URL or by uploading a file from a local machine. The image service feature allows you to build a store of imported files that you can use to create a CD-ROM from an ISO image or an operating system disk from a disk image when creating a VM.The image service supports raw, vhd, vmdk, vdi, iso, and qcow2 disk formats.
• Best-effort VM high availability (VM HA) is enabled by default in AcropolisIn case of a node failure, VM high availability (VM HA) ensures that VMs running on the node are automatically restarted from the failed node to any available space on the other nodes in the cluster. Once the failed node joins the cluster again, VMs are migrated back to the node. This type of VM high availability is implemented without reserving any resources.
• Improved handling of various installation issues, including:+ Unrecognized network devices+ CPU vendor detection+ HDD boot devices
• Note that the command for creating a single-node cluster has changed slightly - instead of using -f, simply issue: "cluster -s create" and you will be prompted to confirm that a single-node cluster is desired.

• Acropolis File ServicesProvides file server capability within a Nutanix AHV cluster, as one or more network-attached VMs, to form a virtual file server.
• Acropolis App Mobility FabricWindows or Linux Guest Customization Customize or clone Windows or Linux guest VMs hosted by AHV. Includes automated OS installation and custom ISOs by using sysprep (Windows) or cloudinit (Linux).
• Acropolis Drivers for OpenStackThese drivers facilitate consuming the Nutanix Acropolis infrastructure as a cloud service or for use in a data center. For example, an OpenStack implementation might require using features such as single sign-on, orchestration, role based access control, and so on. Drivers include Acropolis compute, image, volume, and network drivers.
• Volume Group Support ImprovedREST API and intuitive Prism web console support has been added, as well as including Acropolis command line support.
• Guest VM VLAN TrunkingAHV supports guest VM VLAN tagging, where the tag passes through a single port from the physical network to a VM. It allows the VLAN ID tags to be included in an Ethernet packet to be passed to the guest VM. Guest VM operating systems can use this feature to enable Virtual Guest Tagging (VGT) and simulate multiple virtual NICs.
• Nutanix Guest Tools
• Nutanix Guest Agent (NGA) service. Communicates with the Nutanix Controller VM.
• File Level Restore (FLR) CLI. Performs self-service file-level recovery from the VM snapshots.
• VSS requestor and hardware provider for Windows VMs. Enables application-consistent snapshots of Windows VMs.
• Application-consistent snapshot for Linux VMs. Supports application-consistent snapshots for Linux VMs by running specific scripts on VM quiesce.
• Self-Service RestoreSelf-service restore allows a user to restore a file within a virtual machine from the Nutanix protected snapshot with minimal Nutanix administrator intervention. To perform these operations, you need to install and configure NGT on the VMs.
• AHV Security UpdatesNew users or anyone performing a fresh install will already have an updated glibc and openssl packages. Existing users should "yum update" on the host and update at least these two packages, preferably everything that yum will offer updates for.
• Prism Central does not currently operate with Community Edition. When the next CE release occurs, Prism Central will allow registration of CE clusters and support the full functionality.

Version 2016.04.19-stable

• This is primarily a maintenance release for AOS.
• The method by which DNS servers are configured after cluster creation has been improved to eliminate the occasional case where they would not be set correctly. When creating a 1-node cluster from the installer, DNS servers are no longer a required field. If left blank, default DNS servers of 8.8.8.8,8.8.4.4 will be used. In addition, default NTP servers of 0.pool.ntp.org, 1.pool.ntp.org will be configured anytime a cluster is created.
• During installation, if >7 disk devices are found, additional virtio-scsi controllers will be created to avoid the situation where some disks do not appear in the CVM.

• As this is a maintenance release, the Prism Central compatibility issues have not yet been resolved. This should be resolved in the next feature release.

Version 2016.06.30

Acropolis Block Services
Acropolis Block Services (ABS) provides highly available and high performance block storage as iSCSI LUNs to clients. Clients can be non-Nutanix servers external to the cluster or guest VMs internal or external to the cluster, with the cluster block storage configured as one or more volume groups. This block storage acts as the iSCSI target for client Windows or Linux operating systems running on a bare metal server or as guest VMs using iSCSI initiators from within the client operating systems.

Docker Container Support
The Nutanix volume plug-in for Docker enables Docker deployments to be integrated with external storage systems, in this case the Nutanix distributed file system (NDFS), and enable data volumes to persist beyond the lifetime of a single container machine host.

Internationalization (i18n)
Non-ASCII user defined values (for example, entity names, descriptions, and so on) are supported in UTF-8. For the list of supported and unsupported entities and to change language settings to Simplified Chinese, see the Prism Web Console Guide.

Unfortunately, Prism Central compatibility for CE did not make it in time for this release. It will follow in an upcoming maintenance release.

• Automatically load the e1000e module at boot on Intel Skull Canyon NUCs (or any other platform that requires the updated version of that driver).
• Include the script that went missing that is responsible for setting the DNS & NTP servers after cluster creation.
Version 2016.08.27

• This version combines an AOS maintenance release with some CE features & bugfixes.
• ENG-52807: Support for megaCLI scenarios where the drives are not installed consecutively in the slots.
• ENG-50555: SSDs over 2TB can now be used.
• ENG-52980: Add Disk Simplification ... ce_add_disk ... provides an automated workflow for adding disks.
• Disk details are now shown when minimum requirements aren't met.
• Update e1000e NIC driver for the Intel Skull Canyon NUC.
• Break/fix support. An FAQ on this feature and how to use it is coming soon. The short version is that this will allow you to recover when the USB/host disk dies on any CE node, and also when the SSD/CVM disk dies on a 3+ node cluster. The feature is accessed through the normal installer interface.

Nutanix is pleased to release "the next big thing", previously referred to as by its code name, Asterix Asterix includes over 60+ Major new features, 200+ sub-features, and thousands of misc commits, bug fixes and minor improvements. Some of these changes are right in your face, and some in the background making the sausage faster, better, and tastier.

Release Notes and Things to Check Out
• AHV Hypervisor Update: Massive, Massive, MASSIVE update, brings all system packages current.
• Please let us know if there are any drivers missing for your devices, and we will work to add them.
• Note: This is REQUIRED for NVMe support, and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for everyone else.
• Note: This is the first time we're doing this for CE, so there may still be some rough edges here. Proceed with caution and pretty please be open to troubleshooting if anything goes sideways.
• Note: Depending on your boot media type, hypervisor upgrade can take a *while*. For example, on a SSD-boot setup, it takes about ~5-10 minutes; however, on USB-boot setups (thumdrives), or HDD-boot, it can take 30-120 minutes. During that time, you'll see the progress bar at 71%. If you're really curious, you'll see a lot of YUM traffic in tail -f /var/log/messages on the AHV host itself. Eventually, the host will reboot, and you'll see the update complete.
• NVMe: You asked and we answered, CE now supports NVMe based devices. Also, if your system supports VT-d, NVMe will be presented as PCI-passthrough.
• Note: If you have any issues installing or upgrade hypervisor with NVMe devices, please made a separate thread here, and include, if possible, these three logs to a file sharing service like dropbox. Screenprints / manual screenshots are acceptable if you can't extract the logs directly: /var/log/dmesg /var/log/installer.log output of “modinfo nvme”
• Prism Central: CE users will have access to "Prism Pro" level features, like advance analytics, capacity forecasting, enterprise search, customizable dashboards, in addition to mutli-cluster management.
• Note: Installing Prism Central is covered in the Prism Central Guide, linked at the top of this thread.
• Self Service Portal: Very cool stuff, multi-tenancy built right in to Prism for user self service. Needs 24GB per CVM, and access to a directory service like AD.
• AFS 2.0: GA now, Async DR, quotas, ABS, perf scale up, scale out, and rebalance. NOTE: We'll post the binaries for this next week, dont have them handy right now.
• AHV Affinity Policies: Define scheduling affinity or anti-affinity for licensing, spatial locality, etcAcropolis Dynamic Scheduling - Built in resource compute/storage scheduler, no config needed, automagic out of the box
• REST API 2.0: Unified v0.8 and v1.0 API namespaces, clean and crisp. All docs @ http://developer.nutanix.com/ (new, awesome)
• ABS enhancements: iSCSI CHAP, dynamic session load balancing, IP-based whitelisting, and dynamic online volume grow (online grow also applies to regular AHV vDisks)
• Compression: Switching to LZ4 + LZ4HC, crazy increases, some cases DOUBLE over snappy. Also helped reduce garbage
• Erasure Coding (ECX) enhancements: Better, faster, stronger, this is the 5th large release of ECX. NOTE: This only works on 4 node CE clusters.
• Cluster Latency Visualization: This is hands down the coolest. Check this out under each VM (near the tasks tab). Displays important VM centric metrics such as I/O Latency, I/O Performance and Distribution and Storage Tier utilization.
• Localization: i18n and L10n, For our non-english speaking customers, easy localization. Does Simplified Chinese and Japanese
• VM Flash Mode (i.e SSD Pinning): Rturning to Prism, way easier now, though, if you really need it, just go AFA nodes IMHO
• NCC 3.0: This is a BIG one. I'm happiest about perf improvements. ZOOM ZOOM it's fast. Also, it's now built into Prism, no more going to CLI, run NCC 3.0 full suite right from GUI, including log collector
• Network Visualization: Give you a concise view and traceability from network, vSwitch, to TOR port (assuming your TOR supports SNMP)
• Event Notifications: You can configure webhooks to send event notifications to listeners on the network. This is for service chaining with TBA network vendor solutions.
• NGT: NGT can now be siliently installed. We've vanquished the clicking if you so chose
• NGT/FLR: In-guest User Interface for Self-Service Restore. Yep, exactly as it sounds, GUI File Restore for end users
• Single Node backup target: Exactly what it sounds like, works great for ROBO to have ACTUAL backup (off cluster copies). Use cluster -s 1.2.3.4 --replication_factor=2 create to make this happen
• NOTE: LOCAL RF2, i.e single node backup, does NOT apply to regular CE instances yet, meaning, you can't have VM's running on a single node backup, and you can't make a single node CE have RF2 out of the box. We're working on making this happen.
• Security: Role Mapping is now REQUIRED for AD Auth. Big change, upgrades will be blocked if you dont set this up
• Security: Effective December 31st, we are deprecating TLS 1.1, TLS 1.0, SSLv3 + any non-ephemeral ciphers for *ALL* Nutanix products. After December 31st 2016, Nutanix in its entirety will only allow Ephemeral TLS 1.2 ciphers with no option to downgrade.
• Tech Preview: AHV Hot Plugging Memory and CPU. Currently ACLI only, but works well.
Nutanix is pleased to release "the next big thing", previously referred to as by its code name, Asterix.

This is a hot fix for the 2016.12.22 release, and roughly maps to commercial 5.0.0.2, with one small tweak to CE's SSP functionality, and improvemenets on ce_add_disk script

Nevertheless, this will likely be many folks first go around at this release, so the release notes are similar.
Asterix includes over 60+ Major new features, 200+ sub-features, and thousands of misc commits, bug fixes and minor improvements. Some of these changes are right in your face, and some in the background making the sausage faster, better, and tastier.

Version 2017.02.23

This is primarily a bug fix release against Asterix.

• Prism Central can be updated with the upgrade tar.gz below to update both AOS and Prism Central. This will be much faster and easier than re-deploying the latest version.
• Unlike the previous release, if you download the initial install image it contains the latest AHV. No upgrade required after installation.
• The AHV upgrade is only applicable to clusters still running the original 20150513 build. If you already updated to one of the 20161118.* builds, do not install this build. There are no functional changes, and we are still debugging an issue with sshd that sometimes prevents the upgrade from completing.
• AFS is now available with 1 click download from Prism > Upgrade Software > File Server. You must be on the latest CE to see the download.

• If you are logging in as the admin user for the first time, you must SSH to the Controller VM or log on through the Prism web console. To change the default password of the admin user, you must SSH to the Controller VM or log on through the Prism web console.
• In this release, nCLI (ncli) is not enabled for the admin user. You cannot access nCLI or run nCLI as the admin user. You might see the error message java not installed. If you are logged in to the Controller VM as admin, you can run the ncli command as the nutanix user by using su - nutanix.

• Applications, Scripts, and APIs Using Admin User Credentials
You must update any applications and scripts using the admin user credentials for authentication. Nutanix recommends that you create a user assigned with the admin role instead of using the admin user for authentication.
• Applications and scripts using the admin user for API integration require a password change.
• Do not utilize the admin user for any script or integration authentication. Consider the admin user account as an emergency account for troubleshooting and initial configuration.
• Create separate user(s) for your scripting and integration needs and assign the admin role to them.
The Prism Web Console Guide describes authentication and roles.

• Prism Central Changes
• 1-Click Centralized Upgrades from Prism Central
You can upgrade AOS on some or all of the clusters registered to and managed by Prism Central. The upgrade procedure, known as 1-click centralized upgrade, enables you to upgrade each managed cluster to a specific version compatible with Prism Central.
• 1-Click Prism Central Cluster Registration and Prism Central Deployment
You can now register a Prism Element cluster to an existing Prism Central deployment from the Prism Element web console Home page. You can also register the cluster with a new Prism Central deployment that you can create from the Prism Element web console Home page. Additionally, you can simply deploy a new Prism Central instance from a Prism Element web console Home page without registering the cluster.

• Hot Plugging Memory and CPU on Virtual Machines (AHV) Previously a tech preview feature only, support is now available for hot plugging memory and CPUs on VMs running on AHV for the Self-Service Portal only. You can increase the memory allocation and the number of CPUs on your VMs while the VMs are powered on. You can change the number of vCPUs (sockets) while the VMs are powered on. However, you cannot change the number of cores per socket while the VMs are powered on. You can change the memory and CPU configuration of your VMs only through the Acropolis CLI (aCLI).

Errata
• Please do not apply this update to any nodes that exclusively use NVMe drives. Mixed NVMe/SSD setups are fine but an issue was discovered with the update process when all drives in the node are NVMe. A fix for this issue will be provided in a future release.
