A central theme at the recently concluded .NEXT was ‘One OS, One Click’. It demonstrated how Nutanix is leading the cloud computing revolution with the concept of a singular, seamless operating interface across multiple cloud use cases for end customers. One of my favorite parts of the conference was Sunil Potti’s about taking our Enterprise Cloud platform beyond traditional datacenter or branch office/DR sites to forward or tactical edge locations.
Cloud computing is undergoing an evolution where the exponential growth in data is creating an increased need to have systems in place at forward locations to analyze and process the data locally, offloading the main datacenter. In many ways, the edge is becoming the new beginning for cloud computing.
Being able to efficiently process data at the edge of a network becomes extremely crucial, and at the same time, immensely challenging — especially for organizations in defense, education, energy, first responder, healthcare, and transportation and logistics segments where size, weight and power (SWaP) requirements are a major concern. These organizations demand infrastructure that can withstand the harsh environmental conditions of the edge, while still providing support for mission-critical applications with rapid deployment, high availability, linear scaling and secure operations.
Nutanix Powers the Klas Telecom Voyager Tactical Data Center
To address the demand of tactical markets, Nutanix partnered with Klas Telecom, an engineering and design company that specializes in developing ruggedized, low SWaP solutions for network-edge environments, to provide data center solutions for government and military operations. In February 2017, the first truly tactical hyperconverged system was brought to market – the Voyager Tactical Data Center (TDC) powered by Nutanix.
Equipped with Nutanix award-winning Acropolis and Prism software, the Voyager TDC’s compact form factor drastically reduces SWaP and withstands the harsh physical conditions (high temperature, humidity, shock and vibration) of the field. The joint solution enables customers to deploy enterprise-grade infrastructure at the edge in a single, airline carry-on compliant rollaway case.
The first customer of the Voyager TDC powered by Nutanix was a special operations group based in Tampa, Florida. This solution allows the customer to rapidly deploy and bring with them on a commercial airline a full data storage and compute network solution. The Voyager TDC replaces pallets of non-ruggedized traditional enterprise hardware with a single Voyager TDC that includes four enterprise-grade compute nodes, 10 Gigabit Ethernet switch, and an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) – all in a single chassis. The compact form factor allows end users to simplify transportation, accelerate deployment, ensure the equipment is there when they need it and gain more storage per cubic inch than any other platform, whether tactical or enterprise.
Armed with the Voyager TDC, operators will be able to focus on the applications that power the mission. Whether it is combat operations, humanitarian relief missions or first responder calls, the Voyager TDC can deploy enterprise-grade storage, network, and compute resources, wherever they are needed with one-click simplicity.
We at Nutanix truly believe this joint solution will revolutionize how our tactical customers operate in the field. While this solution was created to better support tactical data center operations for the Department of Defense, it could be equally beneficial to energy, healthcare, first responder, and transportation and logistics customers that may operate in non-conventional environments.
