Hello !!

The setup is that Lenovo HX3310 * 3EA with RF2 configuration.
I want to know that how can I backup guest VM full backup to external side.
It means that Nutanix guest VM full copy to external side.

https://joshsinclair.com/?cat=20

Above link can be backup guest VM to container and then download it by SCP tool.

Q>
1 ) I think that Nutanix AHV is using CentOS base KVM, so that it should be using qemu.
The Guest VM file type should be "xxx.qcow2".
Is it correct ?
Can I copy this entire guest VM file to external side by SCP, FTP or other function ?

I did using below command sample to copy guest VM to other container with vmdk file type.
That is work, but could not access container with scp tool.

# qemu-img convert –O vmdk nfs://127.0.0.1/[container]/.acropolis/vmdisk/undefined] \
nfs://127.0.0.1/[container]/[vmdisk].vmdk &

2) Based on above link that we can be access Nutanix container by SCP session.
However I could not access container by scp. I've used winscp tool.
IP: CVM IP / id: admin / pass: Prism login password / port : 2222

Also I've put the client PC IP address and netmask at container advance setting side for whitelist.

Any idea about above 2 inquiry ?

Create vDisk of the VM on any jump server or on the same server in additional drive, for the same you can use microsoft Disk2vhd or VMware converter.

Q1) correct. I had the same question one day how to do a simple backup. Someone told me the exact same thing. Connect via WINSCP to port 2222. Copy your .qcow2 files to an external location. The only extra work, when you would've to recover. You got no meta data about the VM. So you would have to upload the .pcow2 file back the cluster create a new VM and select the uploaded disk. So you might want to think about a script that also collects your metadata.

Q2) It could be blocked by iptables on your cluster if you're coming from a different subnet. I can tell you though it works. Connect via WINSCP to the Cluster IP with ADMIN user on port 2222.

No guarantee though if this works at the end of the day 🙂 I didn't have time to test this out myself.

Christian

I have the same issue.  Have made an export of the VM’s  to a new container, but not able to get to them from SCP.  Any one been able to do this?

Try with sftp.

Download AHV image/vm disk from AOS 5.10 - scp error on port 2222
