Problem installing CE on a Lenovo SR630 with Lenovo 430-8i

Hello everybody!

We are trying to install a 3 node cluster on our lab but the install process doesn't recognize a disk on the server. Let me explain a bit about our 3 servers:
  • Server Lenovo SR630
  • Disk controller ThinkSystem M.2 with Mirroring Enablement Kit PCI-E x2: One Liteon 119GB M.2 SATA SSD disk.
  • Disk controller ThinkSystem 430-8i SAS/SATA 12Gb HBA PCI-E x8: Two Lenovo 480GB 6Gbps SATA 2.5" SSD disks and two Lenovo 2.00TB 7.2K 6Gbps SATA 3.5" HDD.
We have chosen the 430-8i controller because it's on Lenovo certified hardware for Nutanix, but the install process hangs with an error about no disks on the three servers:
INFO Executing performance test on disks. Please expect a 10-30 second delay per device.
INFO Nutanix Community Edition cannot be installed on this hardware. Reason:

"requirements was not found.\n\n%s" % info)
MinimumRequirementsError: A set of disks matching the minimum requirements was not found.

Found the following disks:

Installation did not succeed.
Pres to return to the login prompt.

We are sure the controller and disks are installed ok on the server, we've done some test with a Linux Desktop distro and the we can see all the disks there.

Looking around we've found someone else with maybe similar problems here.

Any suggestions?? Thanks.

Please go into the management interface (XClarity Controller) and check the firmware of the ServeRAID card under the inventory or firmware update screen.

If the code code level is above the best recipe level the Nutanix Foudnation will not see your disks and fail. There is 6.x firmware out but that does not work with the Foundation. The 3.x code listed in the best recipe is as high as you can go.

Unfortunately, back leveling this code does not typically work from the XCC and you should call Lenovo ThinkAgile support about flashing the code down or getting replacement adapters.

The servers should not come out of the factory above best recipe as well, so please be careful to stick to the beat recipe and/or let support know if they were received at 6.x.

Hello LenovoRyan and MatthiasISS,

Right now we are checking it with Lenovo support because we are in the same point: firmware versions are fine according to the recipe ( but no disks recognized. They are scaling the issue to their lab, so I'll post anything as soon as we have any answer.

Hi again,

The answer is there is not possible to do it on the SR630 with the 430-8i. At least they don't want to spend time trying to guess why.

"Installing Nutanix in this method isn't supported. The SR630 natively doesn't support Nutanix. There are special considerations that must be taken into account prior to deploying Nutanix and adding extra hardware in the manner identified doesn't work.

If you need to run Nutanix AHV, you really need to purchase the ThinkAgile system as there are special changes that need to be made at the factory to support Nutanix.

There are additional support implications in that our ThinkAgile team support Nutanix. IBM and L3 shouldn't be natively supporting Nutanix without the case first going through the LSPOC/ Prem Support team.

Passing case back as there is nothing else L3 can do to assist here. CST may need to consider returning the system and purchasing the correct appliance for their needs. They may wish to reach out to their Lenovo sales representative."

Hello Manuel,

I install Nutanix on a Lenovo ThinkAgile HX 1320 Appliance - 430-8i SAS/SATA 12Gb HBA - with is build for Nutanix AHV. The Nutanix AHV installation failed on the appliance. After reboot there is no HDD or SSD availlable .
So what is the issue on the Nutanix CE (iso File) installation?

Hello Manuel,

I know the issue by Nitanix CE - No HDD after install with 430-8i SAS/SATA 12Gb HBA the adapter driver mpt3sas is missing in The Nutanix CE image
check if you see the driver in : /sys/bus/pci/drivers$

admin@NTNX-A-CVM:/sys/bus/pci/drivers$ ls
agpgart-intel intel-lpss parport_pc serial xen-platform-pci
agpgart-sis ioapic pata_acpi shpchp xhci_hcd
agpgart-via iosf_mbi_pci pcieport vmd
ata_generic langwell_gpio pci-stub vmw_vmci
ata_piix mpt3sas piix4_smbus vmxnet3
Hi Matthias,

The same here, a "udevadm info -a /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000\:ae\:00.0" shows no driver/module loaded for the device. We managed to fix it installing the kmod-redhat-megaraid-sas package with "yum install kmod-redhat-megaraid-sas".
To be able to do the package install you need to tweak the install user on the file /etc/passwd to get a shell instead of launching the installer, after that just configure the net interface and you should be ready to do the yum install (don't do a yum update, highly discouraged by Nutanix!).
After that I was able to complete the install process, but after some hours the cluster began to loose disks... 😞
Hi again,

It's been a while since my last posts about this, but finally it's running!. We have NOT used the 430-8i SAS/SATA 12Gb HBA but the 530-8i SAS/SATA 12Gb HBA, and seems fine. With this 530 just configure the RAID in JBOD mode, so the controller is showing the disks directly to de OS.

Hope this helps!
