Forgotten esxi root password in nutanix cluster

Hi all,

I have a kind of dumb problem. I have a 5 node nutanix cluster at 5.1.1.3, running ESXi 6.0. We've got one host in the cluster where the root password has been lost somehow. According to vmware, the only supported way to change it is to re-install. Which is no big deal, except that if I re-install what happens to the CVM? I understand all the steps like doing a cvm_shutdown, etc. But once CVM is powered off can I move it to another host for safekeeping, and move it back once I'm done? Should I remove it from inventory and then add it back after re-installation? All of the nutanix documentation says not to move it when doing an upgrade of ESXi. But I have to do a fresh install vs. an upgrade. Any ideas?

Thanks very much!

Login to any CVM and run below command.

Specific Host:

============

Login to CVM of the host which you need to change password.

Run below command and provide new password.

ssh root@192.168.5.1 "passwd root"

All Host:

=======

allssh 'ssh root@192.168.5.1 "passwd root"'

This will prompt for new password.

Provide details for each host.

Are you able to SSH to the CVM on that node still? If so, wonder if you can use that to reset the ESXi Root password (since the CVM uses certificates to authenticate to the ESXi node).

From the CVM, you can do a "ssh root@<hostipaddress>" and you should get logged in to ESXi without needing the password... I'm just not sure if you'd be able to completed the password reset step as i think that asks for the old password...
