Erasure coding is recommend for production?

Dear Team,

Is erasure coding is recommend for production?

My Nutanix is on the older version

It shows it's not recommend for production

If I deploy newest or upgrade my Nutanix

Should I enable erasure coding?

Have a nice day

Martin

Re: Erasure coding is recommend for production?

Erasure coding is recommended in production, for certain workloads, where you have write-cold data in good quanitites, and a cluster large enough where it makes sense (can't use it in 3 node clusters, and 4 node clusters it doesn't really make sense)

Certainly there are lots of benefits to newer versions of NOS, I'd recommend you open a support ticket, and support can export some stats from your cluster (curator cli specifically) and evaluate if Erasure coding is a good idea.

Re: Erasure coding is recommend for production?

Jon, can you elaborate on the suggestion that Erasure Coding doesn't make sense in a 4 node cluster?  Is that just due to stripe size efficiencies?  We're just implementing two 4 node clusters so I'm curious if we should simply not use the feature, or if it would be beneficial on file server type storage.

I've seen it mentioned that EC is "not recommended" for three node clusters, just trying to determine it's value on a 4 node cluster.

Thanks

Wowza that post is old. Time flies Smiley Happy

Thanks for reaching out @jlackman. ECX is recommended for production workloads, and works just fine on 4 node systems.

Stripe size efficiency is the biggest downside in 4 node configs, thats about it.
