Deduplication on a Nutanix Container and Dedup inside a Windows Server 2012R2 VM

Hi guys,

just a short question about deduplication.

As for today we are not having dedup enabled on a container, but on several windows 2012R2 VM inside of the container (such as file oder backup server)

if we enable the dedup feature on the container, should we disable it inside the guest OS? Or do they can "live" side by side? Are there any downsides?

i googled a lot but haven't found any best practises...

Thanks a lot.

If you're deduping inside the guest, its likely that you wont see much of any dedupe at the infra level. You may see a little bit, but definitely not as much as when dedupe isn't running inside the guest.

OK, understood, Jon

But what is the best practice in this scenario?

We have a 2016 Fileserver (connected via in-guest iSCSI).

So what are the culprits one have to face if windows-dedupe is on as well on NTNX Container?

Or should we let Nutanix do its magic and leave it off in the VM?

best regards
